Denmark Takes the Lead: EU Presidency Meets a Summer of Culture and Change

Denmark is stepping into the spotlight on the international scene as it welcomes the role of holding the Presidency of the European Union Council from July to December this year. To get ready, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola and political group leaders are heading to Copenhagen this week to synchronize key priorities with the Prime Minister, Mette Frederiksen, and parliamentarians. Top on their agendas are security, the climate, and economic competitiveness, as Denmark prepares to lead the EU through six months dominated by the war in Ukraine, the climate crisis, and trade tensions around the world.

Denmark assumes the EU presidency amidst war on our continent, international trade tensions, and economic pressure. Security, sustainability and competitiveness is the right priority, said President Metsola prior to her visit.

New Social and Policy Developments

Denmark introduced new abortion laws into force from June 1, widening the scope of supporting services to young people and reflecting the country’s progressive social policy. Denmark launched a DKK 500 million program to establish trade links to the continent to boost economic partnership and co-operation.

Summer Festivals and Cultural Highlights

The city erupts in festivals and events over the summer period. The month begins in the Distortion street party, then Copenhagen Photo Festival and the Copenhell metal festival, which welcome Europeans across the continent. Thousands take part in the Royal Run, one large family activity started by Crown Prince Frederik, and the Northside Festival, which welcomes international performers, in Aarhus.

Art lovers can look forward to major openings, including the expansion of ARoS Aarhus Art Museum and the new SMK Thy museum in Northern Jutland, which are both opening this year.

Looking Ahead

As it prepares to take over the EU Presidency and with an intensive calendar of cultural activity, Denmark is to have an exciting summer blending political leadership with its own distinctive blend of creativity, openness, and innovation.
